Hello! Keen-eyed linguists amongst you will have noticed that this week’s headline isn’t in English. It is in fact in German (I hope), because I’m currently headed to Germany for a weekend of Bundesliga football. I could argue that I was there to investigate the social enterprise-like fan ownership model that German football teams employ, but that would be lying. I’m there for the beer and bratwurst.
Here’s this week’s news:
- Santander’s Social Enterprise Development Awards have opened for applications, with grants of up to £10k available for established social ventures. Wunderbar!
- The Bike Project, set up by SSE Fellow Jem Stein, provides secondhand bikes to refugees and asylum seekers in London. They rely on generous individuals to donate bikes but are currently running low and would love any donations. You can donate any bike of any size (including kids) and in any condition. Further details here.
- We have some new taster session dates for our Lloyds Bank and Bank of Scotland Social Entrepreneurs Programme, including new London Start Up dates and a Birmingham taster session for our Scale Up programme.
- Are you involved in a food-based social enterprise? Homeless charity Crisis are curating a day of Food and Social Change workshops at Marmalade (formerly Oxford Jam) on April 15th. The theme of the day is how food-based social enterprises – whether they are working with homeless people to create jobs or tackling food poverty or obesity – can survive financially, be innovative, and learn from others to increase their social impact and avoid the pitfalls. If you would like to be involved, please contact [email protected]
- An organisation that should definitely take part in the Food and Social Change workshops are Mindfood, set up by SSE Fellow Ciaran Biggins. The organisation was profiled this week by achingly cool hipster bible Vice magazine.
- Recent Frontline London programme graduate Liam Burke managed to get a member of parliament to do an honest day’s work when he welcomed Minister for Civil Society Rob Wilson MP as a visitor to his new business 2nd Chances.
- Added to an already stellar line-up of speakers on our Sources of Funding workshop is Fenella Rouse, who will be sharing her knowledge of philanthropy as part of our super funding panel. You can find out more here.
- While I’m plugging SSE courses: SSE Scotland has two super social media workshops taking place on March 23rd and March 24th, for both beginners and more advanced users. Book both for a discount.
- If you are feeling the burden of running an organisation, ‘How Do CEOS Stay Calm‘ could be of interest to you. (If you’ve not been on it before, Quora is an excellent site for
wasting timeall sorts of useful information.
- Finally, SSE Hampshire Fellow Leonardo Greco is running a series of special dance events at the world famous Pineapple Dance Studios in Covent Garden. The first event takes place on March 19th and is an hour and a half of dance-fitness exercise set to a disco beat. You can book a spot here.
Have a good week!
