Natural death for a new life; or why to walk your talk

No matter what interaction I have with SSE students, about evaluation, online stuff, replication, publications etc., only one thing seems to stand out for some of them: that I used to work at the Natural Death Centre. This did not, as one friend ‘jokingly’ introduced me at a party once, involve me "putting people down", but giving independent funeral advice to the public, particularly around ecologically-friendly funerals. It’s a wonderful, tiny organisation that deserves much more support; and it was a great experience working there.

I mention that because last week was the farewell / celebration drinks of a long-term volunteer at NDC, Billy. Farewell and celebration because, after over 5 years as a volunteer, he’s got a job at a funeral directors in Kilburn. Over the years, along with many others, Billy kept us going, sane, amused, caffeinated and, most of all, able to do what we did (as well as doing the majority of the crossword). What was great about the evening was also seeing three other volunteers who we’d taken on at the NDC: Jo, who is now a marketing executive at RNID; Paul, who works for HTEN in Hackney; and Mike, who now runs the NDC. All now fully employed in the third sector, along with Steph, my former colleague, who is now involved with an initiative called Bags Of Change (like a loyalty card crossed with a bag for life: check it out).

As I went home, it occurred to me anew that my old organisation embodied one argument we’ve been making about social enterprise/entrepreneurship: that it’s as much about the change that comes about through and within organisations as the change that is delivered by them to beneficiaries. Which is why scaling up social impact is not just about bigger organisations. The NDC, largely funded by sales of its own in-house publications, has helped thousands of people with independent advice and practical help over the years. But its impact has also been through its organisational values and culture: as Billy put it more eruditely than I could, "an empathy and understanding towards people" that extended inwards as well as outwards. And his journey (volunteer, publishing graduate, Helena Kennedy Foundation mentor, funeral assistant) is just one example of that.

We got a lot of things wrong at NDC (‘we’ meaning ‘I’) and learned a lot in the process, but one thing I do think we got right, and for which I claim no credit at all, is instilling a culture of support, of certain values, and of understanding, that remains to this day. Being sincere, genuine and authentic in the way you operate can bring benefits that are sometimes not instantly obvious; but sometimes, as at Billy’s drinks on Friday, they become all too apparent.

Social enterprise is on the curriculum in schools from September 2008. Those of you who did Business Studies at school will no doubt have your own opinions about whether this is a good or bad thing….

SSE is heading up to Footsey later in October: see you there, people….CAN are also having a ‘Scaling Social Enterprise‘ event on October 30th; we’re on our residential, but looks like a good event

– The evening before Footsey is the Enterprising Solutions Awards, which should mean a few hangovers on the train to York. Word on the street is that it’s ‘cocktail dress’ (!), so look forward to the great and good being suited and booted.

– The 3rd Sector Minister has been out and about visiting two well-known social enterprises in the East Midlands.

–  Fairtrade in NY Times and (coffee-wise) used by McDonalds

Friday round-up: flavours, Bill Clinton, social networking, and more.

It’s that time again: Friday’s round-up of news and views…

– First off, nothing riled me more this week than this article in Third Sector magazine…if I had a pound for every time I read the phrase "Social enterprise is flavour of the month", then suffice to say we would have another revenue stream. Grrrr. You can see my rant underneath the article, but the end of it demonstrates the problem: what’s needed is to "provid[e] a clearer explanation of what exactly a social enterprise is
supposed to be and how third sector organisations can take up this model"
. First of all, we’ve spent years arguing over definitions…there is a government definition which is widely used, and an understanding that social enterprises trade and earn to a greater degree, utilise different legal structures (CIC, Coop, etc) and have differnet governance (often, not trustees). Secondly, social enterprises are part of the third sector: they are third sector organisations themselves. Thirdly, there are a spectrum of choices, structures and legal models for organisations to choose from (or develop into), so why phrase it in such ‘them’ and ‘us’ terms?  Cliched articles written from people who don’t understand the wider sector, or even the terms they’re using, are really not going to help in explaining things clearly, are they?

– OK, rant over, on to more interesting things; Bill Clinton’s been all over the news re. his philanthropic initiatives. Lucy Bernholz has probably given the best summaries: on Clinton Bookbay and Mycommitment.org . Check out this bit in the Guardian as well (on Clinton’s rich mates…)

– YouTube have launched a  Non-Profit channel (also related to Clinton Global Initiative).

Social enterprise: examples and links (US)

– Another potential revenue stream (see above) is the "if I had a pound for every time someone has told me about a new social networking site…." . All of them should read this article: Building a Social Networking Site is Not an Outreach Strategy. Go Laura at Idealware; I’m with you all the way.

– Hazel Blears gave a speech about ‘Confident Communities‘ at the recent DTA conference. Worth a read: she’s been a supporter of SSE ever since an early pilot in Salford, and has a genuine passion for local, community-led change

Social entrepreneurship and enterprise news round-up (Aug / Sep)

As the long gap between posts would suggest, all has been hectic in the house of SSE. Amongst the normal activities and programmes, I’ve also been on the panel for the Social Enterprise Ambassadors programme which has been exhausting, rewarding, inspiring and challenging in equal measure. Quite an amazing three days of interviews (group interviews of 6 at a time), and an amazing snapshot, as someone working in this movement, of what is out there. That’s as much as I can say (I could tell you, but I would have to kill you etc.),  but suffice to say that all the consortium partners are very excited about the people involved.

Anyway, in the interim, much news and views and opinion to report, so here’s the traditional "haven’t-blogged-in-ages-have-a-backlog-of-information-to-share" round-up:

– First up, Gordon Brown’s first big speech referring to the third sector since he became our erstwhile Prime Minister…and choosing a sector venue for a big policy keynote. Check it out here. Much of it was broad brush but reference to the long-touted social investment bank and reaffirmations of campaigning and three-year funding were largely welcomed

– Capacitybuilders has knocked the criticised hubs structure on the head and replaced it with 9 programmes…generally, this will be welcomed, particularly the move to direct commissioning rather than grouping under strategic themes….

Enterprising Solutions shortlist is out there…..SSE chief exec Alastair Wilson is amongst the judges…

– Something I hadn’t come across before: Disabled Entrepreneur of the Year, founded by the unlikely partnership of established charity Leonard Cheshire and EasyJet founder Stelios….

– NEF, who SSE commissioned to do its evaluation, have a DIY guide to Social Return on Investment available for download….they are the leaders on this stuff, so well worth a look if it’s something you’re considering or are interested in…

– Other well-respected people in the field are REDF, who pioneered the concepts of blended value and the like. There’s a podcast interview with their new president available

– SSE Fellow Paul Hodgkin is up for an award as an international "disruptive innovations in health" competition and is the only UK representative…..go Paul, break a leg etc.

– I like the comic strip Doonesbury. And now it mentions how to use the web to do good, I like it even more (via Beth’s blog and others)

Pilotlight have launched in Scotland; they are a like-minded organisation and am glad to say that SSE helped a little in advising their replication plans….

– If the sound of a transparent ethical stock exchange sounds interesting, so might this report from Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship and Jamie Hartzell of the Ethical Property Company.

Finally, just to return to the Ambassadors interviews, we asked all the interviewees / candidates who inspired them, and it was great to hear the answers from people who are hopefully going on to be role models and inspirations themselves. Names mentioned ranged from those you might expect (Gandhi, Martin Luther King) to those you might know (Tim Smit, Liam Black, John Bird) to family (husbands, fathers, children) and to the unexpected (Joe Strummer, Hugo Chavez, the Pied Piper). Most, though, said they were inspired by the people they work with and for….and, at the end of an exhausting couple of weeks, that’s a useful reminder of why we all do this stuff and what it’s all about. Inspiration, empowerment, change, and bringing people with you on the journey.
