Number crunching…Have I Got Social Enterprise News For You

Numbers

If I had a pound every time someone subscribed to Have I Got Social Enterprise News For You, I’d now have £10,000. Yep, we hit five figures this week and now reach a massive 0.015625% of the UK population. Literally 156 in every 1 million people read this newsletter, which I think makes it more popular than the Liberal Democrats. Thank you all for subscribing and putting up with it each week. (I now await a flurry of unsubscribes to take us back below the 10000 mark..!)

Have a good week, here’s your news…

Although it has attracted some criticism along the way, there is no doubt that TOMS is one of the world’s most recognised social enterprises. In this article founder Blake Mycoski talks about re-imagining the company’s mission – there’s some interesting stuff in there about scale versus purpose.

Typical. You wait all year for a crowdfunding course and then two come along at once: we’ve got one in London on 27th January and then in Birmingham on 10th February. Staying on the topic, Nesta are currently running a survey to understand crowdfunding within the community and voluntary sector.

More crowdfunding news! The Youth Funding Network are holding a live event at London School of Economics on 26th January – it’s an opportunity to support three inspirational student-led social change projects. There’s live jazz too. Nice. Details here.

Two SSE students (Roberta Francis of London TAGS and Jay Stewart of Gendered Intelligence) feature in the Huffington Post’s article Transgender Rights Have Transformed Thanks To Amazing Brits Like These.

Reckon you can handle foolish people like me asking blindingly obvious questions about budgeting and forecasting? We’re recruiting for a part time Financial Controller.

Postcode Community Trust are offering grants of between £500 – £20,000 to ‘grassroots organisations, local charities and non-profit community businesses seeking to effect positive change within their local area’. Apply by January 29th.

Also handing out cash are First Utility Foundation, who ‘support projects and innovation which make life better for vulnerable families and individuals across the UK’. Applications open today.

Our friends at SEUK are hosting the Social Value Summit on February 11th at the British Medical Association. It has a very impressive speaker line-up.

Finally, we’ve still got some places left on our Measuring Social Impact course, which runs on 11th and 12th February. It’s sold out the last couple of times that we have run it, so book a place while you can – we won’t be running it again until late Spring.
