Trade Back

Supporting the social sector to Trade Back from Covid-19

What is Trade Back?

In response to the economic crisis, we’ve created Trade Back: a new type of grant that incentivises social impact organisations to trade, while supporting them to recover and rebuild.

Trade Back grants match ‘pound-for-pound’ any increase in income from trading above Covid period levels.

How Trade Back grants work

A Trade Back grant is made up of two elements: a small traditional grant to kick-start recovery efforts; plus an incentivised grant to accelerate growth by rewarding an increase in income from trading.

Trade Back grants provide social enterprises, trading charities and community businesses with support in a more challenging economic environment, while maintaining the ethos and challenge of an incentivised grant.

Through Trade Back, social impact organisations are supported to re-acquire customers, create quality jobs, all while making an impact on society as our economy recovers.

Trade Back and Match Trading

Trade Back draws on the learning from Match Trading® grants, which SSE launched in 2017 and have successfully supported 500+ social impact organisations to grow.  Match Trading grant recipients increase their income from trading by 64% on average over a year – 2.5 times the rate compared to those receiving traditional grants.  More on Match Trading impact click here

Trade Back was developed by the SSE and a Task Force of 20+ social sector funders and support organisations.  This same Task Force successfully developed Match Trading.

How can I get a Trade Back grant?

Community businesses in England will benefit from a Trade Back grant up to £10,000 as part of the Community Business Trade Up programme, in partnership with Power to Change, jointly funded by The National Lottery Community Fund.  It comes with a free 9 month learning programme and a support network of other community businesses in the region.

Apply before 2nd December 2020

From October 2020, 100 social sector organisations will benefit from Trade Back grants up to £7,000 as part of our biggest UK programme: the Lloyds Bank and Bank of Scotland Social Entrepreneurs Programme, run by the School for Social Entrepreneurs, in partnership with The National Lottery Community Fund and the Scottish Government.
